Geoffrey's Dual Deploy

December 2011

Here is Geoffrey Kerbel's slightly damaged dual deploy. It took a hit after landing under a tangled shoot. The crunch runs along one of the spiral grooves above a centering ring and around more than half of the airframe. The airframe also crunched at the most aft centering ring.

I decided to do this repair by cutting two 1/2 inch holes in the airframe to fill with a dense foam from Public Missile (PML). Without diluting, the result is a rock solid expansion to support the damaged frame under the spiral. In this case, it filled the frame from the aft fin's forward centering ring to the forward fins forward ring. As the foam expands, excess exits the airframe through the open holes.

Below is the result. I did some sanding to expose the spiral. I also removed the PML linear rail lugs for a cleaner appearance. Geoffrey might want to just replace them or use launch buttons.

Here I've exposed the airframe above the aft ring. All of the damaged areas have been coated with Bondo and prepared for sanding.

I finally got around to sanding the Bondo. After completely sanding down to the original primer, I re-primed with automotive filler primer. More filling and sanding to come.
